Summary
King County Archives is seeking one highly qualified candidate to serve as an Archives Specialist (Administrative Specialist 3). The Archives mission is to is to collect, preserve, and facilitate access to County government records of enduring historical and legal value for the benefit of the public we serve. The Archives Specialist works under the supervision of the County Archivist and collaboratively as part of the Archives team to provide a variety of archival support services for King County Archives and high-quality customer service to patrons.

The ideal candidate will position will exhibit a strong understanding of archival accessioning and processing standards as well as archival reference practices and research techniques. The ideal candidate will demonstrate interest and aptitude for applications of new technologies to traditional archives practices and will exhibit a commitment to change agility.

Scope of Job Duties: To be considered for this opportunity, you must at a minimum, demonstrate knowledge, skill and ability to:

Assist patrons, in person and remotely, in identifying research needs and provide guidance and access to records such as recorded documents, photographs, maps, and other government records.
Research and retrieve materials using a variety of formats including electronic, microform, and paper-based; effectively communicate with patrons about those findings and how to access them.
Effectively communicate with staff and customers using various methods including verbal and written instructions, correspondence, written reports, and presentations.
Provide excellent customer service in a diverse research environment that reflects fairness, respect, equity, and inclusiveness.
Take the lead on a variety of projects such as digitization initiatives, management and preservation of born-digital materials, equity and social justice initiatives, management of social media platforms, exhibit curation, and organization of outreach events.
Research specialized or technical information related to program-specific projects.
Facilitate discovery of and access to collection information through the development of finding aids and other resources.
Assist with archival accessioning and collection management, as well as perform basic processing tasks using ArchiveSpace.
Train and guide volunteers and student interns in coordination with the County Archivist.
Use common desktop applications, including but not limited to Microsoft Office suite, on a daily basis.
Assist with daily cash handling and receiving payments.
Handle confidential information appropriately.

The Ideal Candidate for This Role Will Have:
Background in archives, historical research, library science, or other transferrable fields such as museum studies or records management.
Experience communicating difficult concepts effectively to a diverse patron base.
Background in project planning and implementation as well as process improvement.
Interest or experience in arranging and describing archival records and creating finding aids.
Excellent collaboration skills and experience building relationships with coworkers, staff, and customers inside and outside the organization.
Interest in and enthusiasm for the digitization and preservation of historically relevant government records.
Knowledge of or interest in learning descriptive formats such as MARC, EAD, DACS, Dublin Core, and other processing and metadata standards.
Knowledge of or interest in learning archival best practices related to the management and preservation of digitized and born digital materials.
Interest in and enthusiasm for community and internal outreach initiatives to communicate the Archives role and value to the public.

This position is represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 117, Professional and Technical Employees. The selected candidate must pass a thorough background check/investigation.

This position performs work in person at the King County Archives building, located at 1215 E. Fir Street, in Seattle. A partial telework schedule may be available upon request.
