Metadata Librarian for Special and Digital Collections
This librarian will be responsible for the creation, management, and preservation of metadata for both physical and digital special collections materials.
Daily Tasks:
Special Collections Cataloging and Metadata:
• Analyze and describe incoming physical materials (books, manuscripts, artifacts etc.) according to national cataloging standards (AACR2 or RDA) and local practices.
• Create new bibliographic records in the library’s online catalog (and Worldcat if necessary), ensuring detailed and accurate metadata for discoverability.
• Use authority control to ensure consistency of names, titles, and subjects in the metadata.
• Review and edit existing catalog records for Special Collections materials, focusing on improving and updating metadata.
• Perform basic materials processing tasks, including printing and attaching spine labels and assigning barcodes.
• Travel between the Main Library and Special Collections SST to process materials.
• Collaborate with Special Collections staff to identify and prioritize materials for cataloging and metadata creation.
• Communicate any issues or discrepancies found during cataloging and metadata creation to Special Collections staff.
• Maintain accurate records of cataloging and metadata activities.
Digital Collections Metadata Management:
• Upload digitized materials (images, documents, audio/video) to the library’s digital collections platform (CONTENTdm).
• Manage access restrictions for digital objects based on copyright and other considerations.
• Ensure proper file formats and technical specifications for uploaded materials.
• Assign detailed metadata to digital objects using Dublin Core standards and other relevant schemas, focusing on accurate and descriptive information for discoverability.
• Conduct metadata updating projects to improve the searchability and discoverability of existing digital collections.
• Link digital objects to their corresponding physical counterparts in the library catalog via
metadata connections.
• Gather and analyze monthly statistics on page views and storage usage of the digital collections.
• Generate reports for library administration on the performance and usage of the digital
collections, considering the impact of metadata on discoverability.
• Stay informed about emerging trends and technologies in digital preservation and metadata best practices.
• Collaborate with digitization specialists on workflow and project management for digital
collections, focusing on metadata creation and integration.
Additional Responsibilities:
• Stay up-to-date with current trends and best practices in library science, both in physical and digital collections management, with a particular focus on metadata standards and applications.
• Participate in training and professional development opportunities related to metadata creation, management, and best practices.
