The mission of the UCSF Library and Center for Knowledge Management is to advance science, foster excellence in teaching and learning, promote health through the collection, development, organization and dissemination of the world’s health sciences knowledge base.

Archives and Special Collections at the UCSF Library preserves and maintains rare and unique materials to support research and teaching in the history of the health sciences.

As the campus library at UCSF, the Library supports the University’s mission. The Library is a unit of the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (EVCP).

JOB OVERVIEW

In 2014-2015 the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is celebrating its 150th anniversary. The UCSF Archives and Special Collections is seeking an Assistant Research Archivist to help with research and organization for several onsite and online exhibits, processing, cataloging, digitization and social media projects related to the University sesquicentennial. Reporting to the Head of Archives & Special Collections, the Assistant Research Archivist is responsible for researching existing archival holdings, contributing content for online and in-house exhibits. She or he helps respond to reference requests relating to UCSF History and 150th anniversary and researches and provides historical information for UCSF schools and departments. The Assistant Research Archivist also participates in digitization programs, scans film negatives, photographic prints, loose sheets and bound volumes in adherence with institutional standards and creates metadata for them. She or he prepares short illustrated postings for Archives blog Brought to Light, assists in alumni and donor-related activities and supports Archives outreach program. The Assistant Research Archivist also arranges, processes and describe archival materials according to accepted archival standards.

Please note: This is a 12 month contract position starting from the date of hire.

Required Qualifications
• A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in history, library/information science, or a related field; and one (1) year of experience working in a University Archives or museum setting
• Demonstrated command of archival theory and practice
• Working knowledge of current metadata and descriptive standards, including DACS, EAD, Dublin Core
• Experience with archival content management software
• Ability to lift and shelve boxes weighing up to 40 pounds
• Demonstrated ability to maintain and safeguard confidentiality of documents and information collected and reviewed
• Knowledge of preservation standards and best practices
• Familiarity with social media and blogging platforms, including WordPress, Facebook and Twitter
• Knowledge of digitization standards and best practices
• Experience with at least one digitization project in a library or archive. Experience with scanning and/or digital photography and proficiency with Adobe Photoshop
• Strong writing, proofreading and editing skills, including utmost attention to detail
• Strong and broad historical research and analysis skills

Physical Demands: requires sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, waist twisting, kneeling, climbing ladders, reaching below and up to shoulder height; lifting up to 20 lbs., lifting up to 40 lbs. below and above waist and overhead, carrying up to 60 lbs., pushing and pulling over 60 lbs.; fine finger/gross manipulation, simple/power grasp, repetitive hand/arm use; exposure to loud noise, dust, fumes or gases, chemicals or toxic substances and latex; ability to differentiate color, verbal communication and use of protective equipment.

Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in history, library/information science, or a related field
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills evidenced by success working in a collaborative environment
• Strong project management skills with the ability to use considerable judgment and initiative
• Experience working with digital content management systems, such as Omeka
• Experience working with Archivists’ Toolkit/ArchivesSpace
• Involvement in planning and execution of (onsite and/or online) exhibitions
