OPUS Archives & Research Center seeks an innovative, collaborative, technical and service-oriented individual to fill the Archivist position. Reporting to the Board of Directors, this position provides leadership in the management and use of the archives through the application of modern collection management techniques, creation of standards-based finding aids, cataloguing (physical and digital), digitization, performing reference and research access services along with the delivery and maintenance of the collections in an online environment within OPUS’ website.
This position acquires, appraises, and processes the archives collections, including arrangement, description, and the creation of archival standard records (MARC) for inclusion in regional, and national databases; identifies items requiring preservation and conservation work and coordinates such activities, and monitors their storage conditions; provides reference assistance in support of the academic and research uses of the collection, including assisting patrons in finding materials relevant to their research; creates digital content from the archives collections with appropriate metadata to ensure discoverability; initiates instruction for archive staff and users regarding how to effectively and efficiently locate information, appropriate research methodologies, and specific resources and discovery tools; and supervises interns and volunteers. The candidate should have an understanding of copyright and rights management issues as well as knowledge of best practices for the arrangement, description, and preservation of paper and object collections.
Minimum qualifications for the position include an ALA-accredited MLS degree with advanced course work in archival theory and methodology or a Master’s degree in archival administration or a Master’s degree in history or another humanities field with an emphasis on archival administration. Successful candidates are expected to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to prepare instructional materials. Candidates are also expected to be able to evaluate materials based on their historical knowledge, be knowledgeable of modern archival descriptive practices, particularly minimal processing, and have the organizational abilities to manage diverse projects. Other requirements include a minimum of one year with cataloging in MARC, application of DACS, creation of EAD finding aids, and bulk digitization with Dublin Core metadata; and one year experience of working with records retention schedules. Preferred qualification includes expertise in teaching or bibliographic instruction. Finally, the candidate should be comfortable presenting written and verbal progress reports to the Board of Directors and speaking to visitors regarding the ongoing and future work within the Archives.
The position will require frequent bending, reaching, lifting of boxes up to thirty pounds, and assembling/disassembling shelving.
