Project Archivist – Evans/Washington Collections

Summary:
The Temple University Libraries http://library.temple.edu  seek  a skilled, professional, detail-oriented Project Archivist to process two complex archival collections. Paley Library is the main library located on the main campus of Temple, a vibrant, urban research university with over 1,700 full-time faculty and a student body of 36,000 that is among the most diverse in the nation. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to an Associate Archivist, the Project Archivist will process and create finding aids for two significant collections documenting African-American history in the Philadelphia region and the country. The Project Archivist will develop and implement processing plans for the two collections, including appraisal, preservation, and application of minimal processing for some series, as well  as write finding aids for the collections. Performs other duties as assigned.
1.       Develops processing plans
2.       Processes collections
3.       Monitors processing supplies
4.       Creates reports and updates
5.       Manages digitization of selected collection content and creates metadata for access

Required Education and Experience:
Master’s degree with an archives management emphasis or concentration; at least 1 year of experience processing complex, multi-series collections; experience working with archival materials in a research setting. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities:
•        Demonstrated understanding of current archival theory and practice.
•        Understanding of digitization processes for preservation and access.
•        Knowledge of archival description standards and practices, including DACS, MARC, LCSH, Dublin Core, EAD.
•        Ability to lift 40 lb. boxes and work in an environment where exposure to dust and mold is possible.
•        Outstanding written, oral communication and interpersonal skills.
•        Ability to work independently, creatively, collaboratively, and effectively as a team member.
•        Ability to solve problems and manage projects.

Preferred Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of 20thcentury U. S. and Philadelphia African-American history
