St. Louis, MO: Digital Imaging Specialist (term), Washington University

This is a 4-year grant funded position with full-time hours and is eligible for full-time benefits.

Essential Functions

Reporting to the Digital Library Services Manager at Washington University Libraries, the Digital Imaging Specialist will be responsible for capture, quality control, and optimization of digital images; gathering of administrative, technical, structural, and descriptive metadata; and tracking, archiving and storage of resulting digital objects for projects operating in the Libraries’ Scholarly Publishing unit. The incumbent will coordinate with the Project Coordinator to create timelines and milestones and with the Digital Library Assistant to carry out image digitization and processing.

Coordinate scanning activities across WUSTL Libraries and serve as a knowledge resource for national and local standards, best practices and workflows

Work with external vendors and service providers to plan, execute, and monitor quality control of offsite digitization

Ensure consistent use of established digitization standards, including file formats, image resolution, filenaming conventions, and metadata standards

Assist faculty, students, and outside researchers with scanning requests, including training on scanning equipment, maintaining a calendar of availability, and managing server space for requested digitized items

Provide authoritative input on image digitization workflows

Develop presentations/outreach on digital imaging standards, processes, and software

Occasional Travel Required

Required Qualifications

– Master’s degree or equivalent mix of education and experience

– 3 years’ experience working in a digitization facility, or with substantial imaging responsibilities within libraries, museums, or other cultural heritage organizations

– Proficient in the setup and maintenance of digital imaging equipment, including digital cameras, flatbed and overhead scanners, photo stands, and lighting environments

– Knowledge of digital photography technical standards, including resolution, tonality, bit depth, color space, and recommended file formats for preservation and access images

– Proficient with image processing workflows and software, especially Adobe Creative Suite, as well as open source packages such as ImageMagick

– Familiar with Windows, Mac, and Unix operating systems

– Excellent oral and written communication skills

– Ability to manage and troubleshoot digital imaging equipment, including liaising with vendor customer support

Preferred Qualifications

– Master of Library Science;

– Familiarity with digital preservation methodologies and concepts related to image files;

– Knowledge of digital library software/platforms such as Omeka or ARTstor Shared Shelf.

Salary Range

The hiring range for this position is $3,396 – $4,331 monthly.
