Archivist 1 and 2 – Civil Service Test Announcement 2015-045
Pennsylvania State Archives
Background:
The Bureau of the Pennsylvania State Archives is part of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) and has over 15 archivists performing a variety of duties related to its mission to collect, preserve and make available the historical records of Pennsylvania, with particular attention to the records of state government. The State Archives website address is: http://pastatearchives.com.
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission hires employees via two separate avenues. Professional-level positions such as Historians, Museum Educators, Curators, and Archivists are filled through the State Civil Service Commission (SCSC). Periodically, the SCSC schedules and administers tests for specific job classifications. Candidates take the test and are ranked on a list based on their score. For some jobs, you will be rated based on your experience and training provided in your application materials. When the PHMC needs to fill a position with that job class, we must limit our search to available candidates who have placed near the top of the list. Thus, we recommend that you check the SCSC website the first week of every month to determine which job classes they have scheduled for testing. For information on how to apply for Civil Service positions, job opportunities, phone numbers for your area and other information, please go to the SCSC website at www.scsc.state.pa.us.
Vacancies:
The Pennsylvania State Archives encourages individuals interested in working for the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to take the civil service examination for the Archivist 1 & 2 positions.
This examination is an evaluation of your training and experience that you complete at home called an application supplement; there is no need to take a formal test at an examination site in Pennsylvania. The names of candidates resulting from these examinations usually remain on the list for three years. PHMC vacancies change from day to day. The Pennsylvania State Archives anticipates hiring a two full-time and 3 limited-term Archivist 1 this summer and the following year. It is best to apply now because by the time you are made aware of a particular vacancy it will be too late to get on the list.
