The Oviatt Library seeks a Resident Archivist for a one-year appointment to serve as part of the Institute of Museum and Library Services-supported L.A. as Subject Archives Residency Program. The L.A. as Subject Archives Residency Program will provide the opportunity for a post-graduate MLIS student, with an interest in pursuing a career in archives, to learn from professionals and scholars in the field and gain experience in community archives. Three-month rotations will offer hands-on experience working on archival projects in Special Collections and Archives at CSUN’s Oviatt Library, and at other community and neighborhood-based archives. It will enable residents to share their archival expertise-and that of their mentors-with staff and volunteers in Southern California community archives. Residents will receive hands-on archival work experience in multiple institutional environments, practical experience with policy and procedural decisions in archival institutions, teaching experience, and assistance with professional development and networking among professionals. The Oviatt Library is a member of L.A. as Subject, a research alliance dedicated to preserving and improving access to the archival material of Los Angeles history. CSUN is partnering with the Autry National Center and the University of Southern California on this grant-funded project.

Major Duties

Under general supervision, the Resident Archivist will complete a supervised archival project and receive mentoring in Special Collections and Archives at the Oviatt Library during the initial 3-month period; complete three 3-month rotations at L.A. as Subject member archives locations; work independently on assigned special projects to improve access to archives and ensure preservation of records in all formats; identify appropriate standards/best practices in archival and records management to be adopted for projects and make recommendations/implement changes as needed; evaluate, develop, and maintain digitization efforts at L.A. as Subject member institutions; participate in training programs, mentoring, and targeted professional development opportunities; participate in instructional teaching and outreach programs at L.A. as Subject member institutions; work with colleagues in other departments of the Oviatt Library and across the L.A. as Subject organization; and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

LA-accredited MLIS degree or a Master’s Degree in Information Science or related Archival Science degree completed since May 2013.
