NATURE OF WORK:

The University of West Georgia Library is seeking forward-thinking, dynamic applicants with diverse backgrounds for the position of University Archivist. Reporting to the Head of Special Collections, this position provides leadership in the management and use of the university’s digital, multimedia, and paper-based records and publications and plays a critical role in connecting students, faculty, and the community to the primary sources pertaining to the institutional history of UWG. Responsibilities include managing the identification, appraisal, acquisition, description, storage, access, preservation, and disposal of university archives and publications, regardless of format. The position collaborates with relevant partners in planning, creating, and managing digitized and born-digital university content. The University Archivist leads departmental efforts to capture, preserve, and make accessible content administratively and culturally significant to the university, including material created by the administration, academic departments, and student organizations. This position, working with diverse populations, provides instruction and reference assistance in support of the academic and research uses of the collection; and initiates outreach and instruction to teach library users how to effectively and efficiently locate information, appropriate research methodologies, and specific resources and discovery tools. The University archivist also engages in outreach activities, projects, and events that encourage faculty, staff, and the general public to use university archives collections and services; and may supervise graduate students, interns, and volunteers. As a tenure-track library faculty member, the University Archivist will be expected to work collaboratively with others; engage in scholarly activities; and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with Libraries and University standards for promotion and tenure. The incumbent will have demonstrated ability to work in a complex, changing environment with a positive, flexible, and innovative attitude, and he or she will have a proven capacity to work effectively and collegially in teams with staff at all levels as well as with faculty and students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required qualifications include: A Master’s degree accredited by the American Library Association with coursework in archives; experience using DACS, EAD, MARC, DC, LCSH, LCNA, and other library and archival descriptive and content standards; one or more years of experience processing archival collections, including experience with minimal and basic processing strategies; one or more years of experience in providing instruction; experience working with diverse populations; superior technical and analytical skills; superior written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to work collegially within and across organizations; and evidence of energy, creativity, initiative and commitment to professional growth. Must have the ability to lift and shelve boxes weighing up to 40 pounds. Preferred qualifications include: A second graduate degree; experience providing reference services and creating exhibitions; experience supervising graduate students.

SALARY: $60,264
