Duties: Provides specialized reference/research assistance for the largest repository of African Americana in the Midwest. Assist the Curator in processing, cataloging, appraisal, arrangement, restoring, transferring records, making finding aids and guides to the collections. Knowledge and understanding in the latest electronic records maintenance and digitization processes. Assist in preparing exhibits and programs for collections. Assist in the upkeep and maintenance of the Vivian G. Harsh Research Collection Archives. The candidate must have a MSLS degree plus a degree or demonstrated knowledge of African-American studies.

LOCATION: Woodson Regional 9525 S. Halsted

DAYS OFF: Two days off per week

SHIFT: Will be required to work some Evenings and Saturdays & Sundays
HOURS: 37.5 hours per week to be scheduled during normal unit hours
Mon.-Thurs 9-9, Fri & Sat 9-5, Sun. 12-5

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree in Archival Studies, OR a Master’s degree from an accredited American Library Association (ALA) Library Science program with nine credit hours in archival science or archival administration studies, OR a Master’s degree in History or a directly related field with nine credit hours in archival science or archival administration studies

NOTE: Physical day to day responsibilities for this title may include the ability to lift and carry library material weighing between 25 and 35 pounds. Ability to stand for extended or continuous periods of time. Ability to bend, stretch, twist or reach out with one’s body arms or legs. Ability to climb staircases, ladders and or step stools.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or a skills assessment test as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

(a) Knowledge of archival processing in an academic or public library and/or museum setting

(b) Experience working in the field of Special Collections

(c) Knowledge of EAD, DACS and/or other metadata standards

(d) Work and/or volunteer experience working with African American Collections/Exhibits in a gallery and/or library and/or museum setting.
