Job Description (if URL to posting not available): Douglas County History Research Center at Douglas County Libraries seeks a graduate student to join our team as Special Collections Metadata Intern. This position will gain hands-on experience in creating, describing, and managing digital objects. The objective will be to create and manage a substantial amount of catalog records, which includes collection-level and item-level descriptions. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivator with excellent attention to detail, who is willing to quickly learn library and archives software applications. Work is performed under supervision of a Douglas County History Research Archivist.
Examples of Duties:
· Creates original, non-MARC catalog records, and enters content descriptions and technical details about the digital objects. This task requires implementation of descriptive standards outlined in DACS (Describing Archives: A Content Standard).
· Conducts online searches of authority files and assigns subjects headings and classification terms using independent professional judgment.
· Performs importing and exporting procedures between content management systems, in preparation for and facilitation of online retrieval and access.
Qualifications:
· Analyze content of digital objects (research will be necessary for gaining intellectual control), and create quality metadata in accordance with department standards and guidelines.
· Develop and document workflows for metadata creation, and assist in planning metadata strategies and project roadmaps for subsequent interns.
· Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, c-workers, and volunteers.
· Must communicate effectively using English. Must read, write and understand English at a level appropriate to the position.
· Computer Skills: Must demonstrate proficiency in computer use including internet, email, Microsoft Office Products (or equivalent). Keyboard skills required at an equivalent of typing 50 words per minute with minimal errors. Must be able to learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs as required to effectively and efficiently perform assigned duties.
· Physical Abilities: Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to: Work at computer workstations, repetitively for extended periods. Access and transport relevant materials up to 35 pounds, and read a minimum 8 point font, regularly. On an occasional basis, tolerate residual smoke, dust, mold or foreign substances on materials.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
· Must be enrolled in a graduate program in history, public history, or library and information science.
· Requires advanced typing and communication skills; ability to work independently; understanding of collections management; and a genuine interest in cultural heritage.
· Ability to lift materials up to 40 pounds and perform other administrative or clerical tasks.
· Ability to read, follow directions, learn technical procedures within the department, and organize time and tasks efficiently. Must be able to perform repetitive, detail-oriented tasks with a high degree of accuracy.
· Experience with Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel, preferred.
· Employment or volunteer history with library, archives or museums preferred.
