JOB DESCRIPTION

The Office of the Historian seeks a graduate student in library science and information management for an archival internship. This Spring 2016 semester internship will provide experience with archival processing, congressional papers, XML, and photo archives for a motivated student in the library science, archives, and cultural heritage management field.

The intern will assist the staff with:
•       conducting a survey of repositories with personal papers collections of former Representatives
•       updating research collection information for the online Biographical Directory of Congress using an XML database
•       appraisal and preliminary processing of a large collection of photographs
•       day-to-day office operations
•       other special projects as assigned

The intern must be highly motivated, collaborative, and possess excellent research and computer skills. The ideal candidate will have an interest in archival processing, an attention to detail, and the ability to handle collections material with care.

AVAILABILITY
The Office is seeking an intern willing to work a minimum of 10 hours per week. The hours and days are flexible, and we are also willing to accommodate more hours per work if needed to fulfill credit requirements at the intern’s college or university.

ABOUT THE OFFICE
The Office of the Historian works closely with the Office of Art and Archives to research and collect more than 200 years of U.S. House of Representatives history in the form of documents, artifacts, biographical information, historical analysis, and artwork, providing a variety of services concerning historical publications, the House Collection, and the records of the House. The Office of Art and Archives also processes the records of the House and oversees their eventual safe transfer to the National Archives, helps House committees and officers identify records for permanent retention, and provides records management advice to Members for their congressional papers.
