Responsibilities
The Metadata and Digital Asset Manager resolves highly complex issues relating to systems selection and performance and metadata creation and enhancement. In collaboration with BAMPFA Film Library and IT staff and UCB’s Research IT department, researches, recommends, develops, and sustains institution-wide digital asset management solutions for varied collections, including art, audiovisual materials, ephemera, and documentation. Creates and upgrades metadata and catalog records for films, videos, digital files, books, and serials.
-Determines criteria and functionality needs for complex systems.
-Analyzes and prepares metadata for many media types and subcollections for migration or mapping between digital asset systems.
-Collaborates with BAMPFA and UCB IT departments on system customizations, upgrades, integrations, testing, and maintenance.
-Collaborates with UCB Research IT department to optimize BAMPFA instances of open-source systems such as CollectionSpace and works with vendors to implement and improve performance of third-party systems such as Piction.
-Troubleshoots and helps resolve digital asset management systems’ software and performance.
-Works with stakeholders across the BAMPFA to codify and implement digital asset metadata standards and workflows. Plays a key role in leading user training and assisting users with all aspects of digital asset systems.
-Uses highly specialized technical and subject matter expertise to create and upgrade metadata/catalog records for films, videos, digital files, books, and serials directly into OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) under the aegis of the UC Berkeley Library.
-Performs complex database maintenance by resolving conflicts and improving or correcting bibliographic, item, holdings and/or authority records in the UCB online catalog, OskiCat. Catalogs in MARC21 format; applies national and film-specific cataloging rules as appropriate, such as Resource Description and Access (RDA) and Archival Moving Image Materials, 2nd edition (AMIM2).
-Uses specialized equipment such as flatbed viewing tables for 16mm and 35mm film and a variety of video equipment.
-Assists other Film Library staff members with research requests; occasionally handles reference and research screening duties in their absence.
-Reads, evaluates and indexes documents for inclusion in the CineFiles film document image database, adhering to ISBD punctuation rules, Pacific Film Archive (PFA indexing guidelines), and Library of Congress Authorities.
-Oversees student employees’ work in scanning still photographs, documents, and other materials.
-Assists in the preparation of statistics and reports and in writing grants related to collection and asset management.
Required Qualifications
• Knowledge of data management operations, including data definition, data modeling, data analysis, database administration & support, data conversion and management of content or unstructured information.
• Able to apply basic skills in computer programming languages and demonstrate aptitude for learning new tools to perform data analysis tasks.
• Experience in managing metadata, born-digital and digitized media assets.
• Excellent analytical and problem solving skills together with attention to detail for complex, possibly repetitive, detail-oriented work.
• Advanced professional experience in moving image, monograph, and serials cataloging in MARC21 format.
• Proficiency in use of OCLC and integrated library systems, preferably Millenium, as well as collection and asset management systems, preferably Piction and CollectionSpace.
• Advanced knowledge of national cataloging documentation and tools, (i.e. OCLC, RDA, RDA toolkit, PCC BSR, MARC21 formats, Library of Congress Classification and Subject Analysis)
• Extensive experience in full-level original and copy cataloging in many languages.
• Proven expertise in handling archival film and operating viewing tables and rewinds.
• Advanced knowledge of FileMaker Pro, Adobe and Microsoft Office.
• Strong writing and communication skills.
• Knowledge of cinema history.
• Must be self-motivated and be able to work independently or as part of a team.
Education/Training:
• Degrees in Film or Media Studies or Library and Information Studies desirable.
• Relevant library, asset management and/or film archive experience, possibly in combination with specialized training and skills or relevant academic preparation.
