Job Description
SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION: The purpose of this classification is to assist the Audiovisual Archivist with his or her duties following policies and procedures for audiovisual materials processing, preservation, and providing access to McClung and Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound (TAMIS) collections. Knowledge, skills, and abilities include Must have familiarity with relevant metadata standards, must be capable of operating and maintaining a broad spectrum of obsolete audiovisual equipment, must demonstrate a commitment to keeping pace with emerging technologies and standards for audiovisual care and handling, preservation, metadata, streaming audiovisual content, and digital sustainability; must be able to safely handle decaying and/or decomposing fragile audiovisual materials and possess the knowledge and skills required to transfer the content to current archival media: must have ability to safely handle/ship fragile, possibly dangerous goods such as nitrate film, must be able to treat “sticky” tapes and other decomposing magnetic media for preservation; must be able to demonstrate experience with sound, film and video formats. Related equipment, and related preservation and reformatting issues and standards; and must have knowledge of current trends in archival preservation as they relate to audiovisual holdings; must have knowledge of issues surrounding the creation and management of digital audio and visual formats. Must have ability to operate audiovisual equipment, personal computer and computer peripheral equipment, and routine office equipment. Must be able to use Microsoft Office software. Must be able to use specialized software including Final Cut Pro X, Quicktime Pro, Blackmagic Media Express, and CONTENTdm to capture, edit, and manage content. Must be able to operate book trucks and/or box trucks and be able to climb a ten-foot ladder. Must be knowledgeable of, and apply, methods to mitigate potentially hazardous conditions such as exposure to dust or mold and film cleaning solutions and handling nitrate film.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Acquisitioning, accessioning, inspecting, documenting, reformatting and conservation of the audiovisual (AV) material within the McClung Historical Collection and performing other duties as assigned by the Audiovisual Archivist. Ensures preservation and accessibility of audiovisual materials; cleans, inspects, organizes, and re-houses AV materials; inspects, assesses and documents incoming material of audio video and other film collections; assists in selecting materials for digitization; migrates analog content to digital files. Organizes collections and keeps accurate metadata on collections via FileMaker Pro database. Troubleshoots information technology hardware and software. Assists patrons with research and document location, provides advice and support to other archive staff in making AV holdings more readily accessible and in duplicating audiovisual materials for access.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Inspects, assesses and documents incoming material of audio, video and other film collections. Assists in selecting materials for digitization. Migrates analog content to digital files, following specifications for long-term storage and preservation of analog items and digital files. Assists the Audiovisual Archivist with his or her duties. Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in Library/Information Science, Archival Studies, or related field or equivalent experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, equipment, and tools, such as a .computer, printer, facsimile machine, copy machine, and calculator. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials of more than fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to climb a ten-foot ladder. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.
