JOB SUMMARY

The archivist is responsible for the cycle of a collection from the initial acquisition of records with significant historical and research value in any format (print, photograph, sound, moving images, digital) to the arrangement, description, cataloging, preservation and providing reference for these materials. The archivist will provide leadership in developing digital asset management. As the agency records officer, the archivist will provide oversight for the organization, classification, storage, access/discovery, retention and destruction processes for both electronic and paper based records.

The archivist will participate in the development of Library & Archive Division policies and procedures; assist with monitoring the status of physical facilities; identify and apply for grants; identify cost-saving measures and sharing of resources; contribute to data collection and analysis; identify, supervise, and evaluate graduate internship projects; evaluate, recruit and train volunteers; represent AHS on various internal, local and regional committees; participate in outreach programs; plan reading room and online exhibits; collaborate in developing Library & Archive Division brochures/materials; and perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

General archival principles, methods and standards of practice
Archival preservation processes and management of all archival materials
Methods and techniques of project management
Digital asset management principles
Arizona History

Skill in:

Written and verbal communications to include grant writing
Collection assessment for historical and research value as well as physical condition
Computer skills and evolving computer management software
Planning for future collecting, especially digital collections
Training/supervision of new staff members, graduate students, and volunteers
Understanding that archival reference includes broad knowledge of resources outside the agency
Broad knowledge of cataloging and principles of information architecture

Selection Preferences:
Minimum 3-5 years of professional archival experience
Experience with digital asset management projects
Master degree in either LIbrary Science with an archives focus from an ALA accredited program
Master degree in Archival Studies or Archives Administration; or a Master degree in History with three years of experience in records management or technical archival work
Certification in the Academy of Certified Archivists
