General Info: James Madison University Libraries & Educational Technologies is seeking a qualified Special Collections Archivist. As part of LET’s Special Collections Unit, this position ensures information discovery and optimal patron access to LET’s unique and special collections, as well as providing skilled reference services in support of these collections.

Duties and Responsibilities:
– Accession all incoming materials, including rare books and manuscripts.
– Process manuscript collections, applying national standards and best practices.
– Manage Special Collections Reading Room, providing security for materials and professional reference support to onsite and remote patrons.
– Supervise undergraduate and graduate student assistants and interns in processing and Reading Room work.
– Provide leadership for outreach activities, including the Special Collections Speaker Series and social media.
– Serve as liaison between Special Collections and Digital Collections for on-demand digitization and digital access to unique collections.
– Collaborate with Digital Collections and Metadata Services units to coordinate metadata identification for digitized Special Collections materials.
Qualifications: Required Qualifications:
– Experience processing physical archival collections, including experience working with sensitive materials and special formats.
– Experience providing onsite and remote reference services, preferably in an archives or special collection setting.
– Experience with EAD, Dublin Core and other descriptive standards for archival materials.
– Experience with an archival management system such as ArchivesSpace.
– Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Pro; preferable familiarity with various Adobe Creative Cloud applications.
– Demonstrated experience with social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. and ability to synthesize large amounts of information into concise posts for social media.
– Knowledge of and experience in applying national digitization practices and standards.
– Project management experience.
– Attention to detail and accuracy; strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work in a production-oriented environment.
– Effective written and oral communication, organization and time management skills.
– Ability to work independently and as a team member.
– Ability to lift 40 pounds with or without accommodation.
– Ability to work in an environment which may include dust and mold allergens.
– Strong dedication to customer service.
– Ability to be self-directed and flexible in work routines.
Preferred Qualifications:
– Master’s degree in Library Science, Public History or a related field.
– Proven management experience in progressively responsible related positions, including one year of supervisory experience.
– Experience with short-term or long-term digitization projects, including scanning and description of materials.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
The JMU Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes information on the Harrisonburg Main Campus as well the three overseas branch campuses; Florence, Antwerp, and London.
