OVERVIEW
Under the supervision of the Managing Archivist, the Assistant Archivist will work primarily in support of the archives reference services, as well as assist with the day-to-day operations of the archives and special collections. This is a part-time, independent contractor position at 16 hours per week, with Thursday being a required day. Pay rate is $25 an hour.

REFERENCE
Support the GLBT Historical Society archives reference activities:
– Provide reference service to users of the archives in person and remotely, including answering email and phone reference requests, maintaining a calendar of reference appointments, and ensuring appointments do not exceed reading room/patron capacity.
– manage rights and reproduction requests.
– manage the security and appropriate use of collection materials in the reading room by: registering and checking in patrons; reviewing reading room rules, conditions of use, licensing and reproduction fees; providing Request to Publish forms, when needed; and enforcing all reading room rules and policies.
– follow procedures for searching, retrieving, and serving collection materials from the stacks for patron use while utilizing appropriate handling practices; and ensure that collection materials are properly returned to their designated storage location.
– maintain accurate statistics relating to reference activities.
– process reproduction requests for still image collection materials and liaison between researchers and third party vendors for moving image reproduction requests.
– other duties as assigned.

ADMINISTRATIVE
Assist the Managing Archivist in the daily operation of the archives, including but not limited to:
– assisting with appraisal of new acquisitions.
– accessing, surveying, and/or processing small to medium sized archival collections.
– responding to general requests and inquiries via email, phone, or in-person visits.
– maintaining official records of archives projects, programs and activities.
– writing monthly reports of activities for the Managing Archivist.
– keeping manuals, policy documents, and training materials up to date.
– serving as a liaison between potential collection donors and the Managing Archivist.
– performing outreach activities such as preparing exhibitions, developing or hosting workshops, and developing small-scale displays in the reading room.
– hiring, training, supervising, and developing projects for volunteers and interns.
– other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
– an ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information science with an emphasis on archival studies.
– one year professional reference work in an archives or library.
– 1-3 years professional archival experience with increasingly complex duties.
– strong knowledge of copyright law as it applies to use of archival collections.
– experience working with analog and digital archival collections.
– detail oriented.
– ability to manage multiple projects and work both independently as well as in a group.
– passion for LGBTQ history.
– ability to lift up to 40 pounds of material.
