Wayne State University seeks a knowledgeable, innovative, service-oriented individual for the position of United Auto Workers (UAW) Archivist at the Walter P. Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs. Located in the heart of Detroit’s Midtown Cultural Center, Wayne State University is classified as a Doctoral University: Highest Research Activity. The United Automobile Workers of America (UAW) is the primary union within the American automobile industry. Founded in 1935, the UAW became one of the most powerful unions in the United States, both on the shop floor and within the American polity. The archives for the United Auto Workers document the evolution of the union from its early origins in the 1930’s to present day and include the records of the union’s international headquarters, locals and regionals, as well as the personal papers of prominent union members. The Walter P. Reuther Library, then known as the Labor History Archives, became the official repository of the UAW in 1962.

This position supports the Wayne State University mission to create and advance knowledge, prepare a diverse student body to thrive, and positively impact local and global communities. Wayne State students, staff, and faculty strive to overcome historical and divisive biases in our society. This position embraces an environment of inclusion that moves beyond simple tolerance to recognizing the richness in individual identities of people and diverse perspectives.
