The Center for Railroad Photography & Art is a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts and education organization whose mission is to preserve and present significant images of railroading, exploring the relationships between railroad art and culture with American history and life. The Center does not maintain its own museum space, but partners with organizations across the country to present traveling exhibitions, events, and publications, and to acquire and maintain significant collections of railroad photography and art.
Internship opportunities are available for students interested in photography and archival studies. Specific knowledge of railroads is not required, so long as students are curious and willing to learn. Students need to be highly self-motivated and comfortable working independently, but they will have the opportunity to contribute in meaningful ways to the Center’s core projects. Center staff members will provide direction and are eager to work with the university and the students on projects that will benefit the organization while helping the students grow and providing experience that supplements their education and assists in their professional growth.
Photographic Archives Intern Duties
• Preserves photographic materials by transferring original media to archival-safe housing
• Maintains original organizational system created by photographer
• Notes strengths of collection with regards to era, geography, subject matter, etc., and identifies
potentially significant images
• Digitizes analog media using digital cameras and/or scanners, transferring organization scheme to
digital files
• Posts and shares photographs online through the Center’s social media channels
Skills required
• Organization
• Willingness to learn and follow best practices for photographic archiving
• Willingness to learn about railroad history in order to identify important trends and images within
large collections
• Preferred: familiarity with Photoshop and digital cameras and scanners
