Please include instructions for how to apply.: The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives is seeking an experienced, collaborative and proven leader to serve as Director of Archival Operations. This professional will be responsible for overseeing the entire scope of archival services at the American Jewish Archives (AJA). The Director of Archival Operations will be expected to coordinate and lead a team of archival professionals in shaping the institution’s archival priorities. This professional must be well versed in the best practices of archival work, including the ability to assess, process, catalog, preserve, and make available valuable collections of primary source materials. Candidates for this position should also have experience in making collections accessible to a wide range of users through public events and exhibitions. The Director of Archival Operations will play a prominent role in the process of negotiating for the acquisition of new collections for the AJA.

The Director of Archival Operations reports directly to the Executive Director of the AJA and will serve as a member of the institution’s Executive Administration along with the Director of Administration and Educational Outreach, and the Director of Research.

The ideal candidate will possess demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills, outstanding written and oral communication skills, and analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to think strategically and embrace change-management strategies. Additional key attributes are a strong commitment to providing excellent customer service; demonstrated ability to interact successfully with a variety of constituents; demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively to develop productive partnerships within and across organizations; focused attention to details, deadlines and goals; and a working knowledge of modern archival systems, digital initiatives, and innovative strategies.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s degree from an ALA -accredited program; or related advanced degree and ACA certification
• No less than 5 years of professional experience working in an archival center, library, or cultural heritage institution with management experience
• Demonstrated experience arranging, describing, and managing archival collections
• Demonstrated experience with archival and library standards and tools, such as EAD, MARC, LCSH, and DACS
• Demonstrated experience in management of a staff.
• Experience contributing to systems development
• Experience working with and developing systems for digital collections.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced degree in or knowledge of American History/American Jewish History
• Working knowledge of archival systems
• Experience with grant writing and administration of grants
• Experience in donor relations and cultivation of donors
• Experience working with Archival or Library Catalog specifically CuadraStar +/or Presto
• Working knowledge of digital repository systems and digital curation

The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives (AJA) is a semi-autonomous division of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR). The AJA enjoys an international reputation among scholars of the American Jewish experience and is generally believed to be the world’s largest catalogued collection of documentary evidence on the history of American Jewry.

The AJA was established in 1947 by the renowned historian, Dr. Jacob Rader Marcus (1896-1995) in order to collect, preserve, and make available for research materials on the history of Jews and Jewish communities in the Western Hemisphere (primarily focusing on America) including data of a political, economic, social, cultural, and religious nature.
