CVPath Institute is a leading non-profit medical research and education organization dedicated to improving patient health management for those suffering from cardiac and vascular diseases. We provide consultation, histology, and diagnostic services to promote discoveries that advance diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, the institution codifies one of the largest and most comprehensive repositories of diseased human tissue and makes it available for investigative studies and teaching. CVPath has an extensive archive consisting of written records, slides, tissue blocks, wet tissues, scientific specimens, files, letters, films, electronic and computer records.

Job description

The Archivist Intern will support the Head Curator and Archivist in a full-scale inventory of the digital and physical collection of archival materials and documents. The Intern will perform a variety of tasks such as: cataloguing, tagging, data-entry, transcription, and summary, in addition to ensuring proper collections housing and storage conditions for the Archive. Also, the Intern will learn proper protocols for preserving specimen integrity, and help the Head Curator and Archivist maintain the archive by disposing of archival materials which have exceeded the specified record keeping requirements.

The Intern will also gain experience scanning and uploading documents and creating metadata for the documents, other basic skills very useful to archival studies. Through this internship, the incumbent will also learn how a special library and archives works, as well as contribute to the archive’s digitization project. Direct supervision will be provided by the Head Curator.

This is a full-time opportunity requiring up to 40 hours week and commitment for 3.5 months (May – August, 2018)—or until the project is complete.

Qualifications

Attention to detail and good verbal and written skills are required. We are seeking a student enrolled in a library science/archives or history program with experience cataloguing archival materials. (Knowledge/experience with Microsoft Excel specifically would be helpful). Some archival coursework or experience is preferred. Applicant must be willing to handle materials associated with a pathology laboratory, i.e. wet tissue derived from various animals, and must also adhere to relevant safety protocols.
