Division Information:
The State Library of North Carolina is the principal library of state government, with a mission to build the capacity of all libraries in North Carolina and to provide access to specialized collections for its residents. The State Library is comprised of three major programs: The Government & Heritage Library (GHL), the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, and Library Development.
The GHL provides services and information related to North Carolina government, history, demographics, statistics, and cultural heritage. It is the permanent repository for state agency publications and collects, preserves, and provides public access to current and historical state publications in print and digital formats. The GHL consists of two units, Content and Information Delivery (reference, access, education and outreach, and digital information management services), and Content Management and Access (cataloging, collection development, State Publications Clearinghouse, acquisitions, and user experience). The GHL is a member of NC Cardinal, a consortium of North Carolina public libraries that share an online catalog and integrated library system (ILS), and share resources with member libraries.
Description of Work:
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Creating original cataloging and complex adaptive cataloging records, including subject analysis for material in various formats–born digital, digitized, serials, print, microfilm, maps–for North Carolina, History, Genealogy, State Publications, Federal, and Newspaper collections
• Cataloging materials using Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) Connexion, Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), Library of Congress Classification (LCC), Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) Classification Scheme, and the NC State Documents Classification Scheme
• Importing catalog records into the Evergreen ILS and creates and updates item records
• Creating personal, geographic, and corporate headings for the Library of Congress’ Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO)
• Cross walking digital content into digital repository and add metadata as needed
• Creating, updating or fixing catalog records for serial state publications (complex serials with runs of 100+ years and multiple title changes)
• Cataloging materials for the Legislative library and upload records for the Museum of Art Library
• Participating in library cleanup projects and relocations (i.e. weeding, catalog record improvement, inventory)
• Uploading and editing monthly batches of FDLP catalog records
• Serving as an expert cataloging resource for the GHL, State Library, NC Cardinal, and state agency libraries
• Participating on GHL teams, attends meetings, completes work for the teams
• Writing procedures for new cataloging activities and update old procedures
• Working with GHL and Archives staff on the development and/or maintenance of controlled vocabularies for descriptive metadata and local metadata standards, checking and approving metadata for other staff, and updating the GHL metadata guidelines as needed
• Making presentations at national and local conferences
• Providing in-person and virtual customer assistance, which includes occasional Saturday work, and occasional evening work for special events, presentations, or conferences.
• Occasional travel is required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

To qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following KSAs listed below:
• At least 2 years of cataloging experience
• Knowledge and skills related to using and interpreting RDA cataloging standards
• Demonstrated skill with using LCSH to create subject headings
• Demonstrated knowledge of the MARC21 format for bibliographic data
• Demonstrated skill with creating call numbers using a classification scheme(s).
• Demonstrated knowledge of OCLC’s Connexion software to create catalog records and update holdings
• Demonstrated skill working with serial records
Management Preferences:
• Experience creating original and complex adaptive cataloging records
• Experience working with descriptive metadata (i.e. Dublin Core, MODS, OLAC, TEI)
• Experience creating NACO headings (geographic, personal, and corporate)
• Knowledge of NC history, government, and culture
Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to lift 40 lbs.
• Must be able to work with library materials that may include dust or mold.
