Under the direction of the Director of Archives & Special Collections, the Esperanto Project Archives Assistant will arrange and describe archival materials and catalogs Esperanto books for the J. Tilman Williams, Oazo de Esperanto, and Esperanto Club of LA Collection. The successful candidate will also prepare a descriptive finding aid, digitize archival materials and generate metadata for the ContentDM, the department’s digital asset management system.

The ideal candidate will have a working fluency in the Esperanto language, and have knowledge of archival and book cataloging according to RDA standards. Book cataloging will involve using OCLC Connexion to locate existing records of materials in OCLC or create new records if none exist, downloading them to the CSU Library Management System, and preparing them to reflect local holdings. For Archival materials, the Archives Assistant will organize materials according to DACS standards and create finding aids on online displays using ArchivesSpace and ContentDM software.

Candidates with a strong working knowledge of the Esperanto language are encouraged to apply even with limited cataloging experience. Cataloging skills will be augmented after hiring. Candidates without experience with the Esperanto language are encouraged to apply but should have a knowledge and enthusiasm for languages, experience with book cataloging and archival processing.
This one -year 25-hours a week project position requires knowledge of archival and book cataloging and/or an understanding of the Esperanto language. If the incumbent does not have knowledge or understanding of Esperanto, it is expected that they will have the ability to catalog books into the Library’s catalog, generate archival finding aids and metadata for ContentDM. If the incumbent has knowledge of Esperanto but limited library/archives experience they will be trained in book and archival cataloging. Knowledge of additional languages is helpful in understanding Esperanto.
