Description:
The University of Illinois at Chicago seeks an Instructor and Processing Archivist for the University Library’s Special Collections and University Archives Department. In coordination with the University Archivist, the Processing Archivist will process records and faculty papers in a variety of media formats, creating standards-based archival description.
Contract: This is a one year appointment. Renewal is subject to availability of funding.
Duties:
Work independently to process assigned university records and faculty papers.
Create inventories and detailed DACS (Describing Archives: A Content Standard) compliant finding aids and encode those finding aids according to EAD (Encoded Archival Description) standard for the library’s catalog and an archival collection management system.
Identify sensitive materials in a timely manner for review by the University Archivist.
Research the historical context of the unprocessed collections.
Organize and rehouse collections in the appropriate archival containers.
Assist with receiving and properly logging new accessions.
Locate and record appropriate storage space for processed records and papers.
Create metadata records for graphic images according to Dublin Core-based metadata standards.
Train and supervise student workers performing basic archival tasks.
Assist with the preparation of an University Archives processing procedures for addition to the new archival collection management system’s manual.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education Required:
Master’s degree in library and information studies from an ALA-accredited program; or, Master’s degree in history or a related discipline and formal coursework in archival administration.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
Hands-on archival processing experience
Understanding of archival best practices; techniques including appraisal, accessioning, arrangement and description; and standards including EAD and DACS
Familiarity with content management systems used to describe archival records and papers
Strong project management and organizational skills
Excellent problem-solving skills to address ambiguous or complex issues.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro software applications
Ability to lift and move 40 lb. containers
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with CuadraSTAR SKCA
Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists
Experience working with electronic records
About UIC University Archives
The University Archives is the official repository for records with permanent historical value from the University of Illinois at Chicago dating from the establishment of the Chicago College of Pharmacy in 1859 to the present day. In addition to the records of the colleges, departments and campus units at UIC and its predecessors, the UIC Archives also includes selected professional and personal manuscripts of faculty, staff, and alumni donated to the University for preservation and use.
The UIC Archives is part of the Special Collection and University Archives department located at the Richard J. Daley Library and the Library of the Health Sciences–Chicago.
SALARY/CONTRACT:
This is a full-time twelve month appointment; renewal of this appointment after one year will be subject to availability of funding. The annual salary for this appointment is $51,333.
Benefits for a twelve month appointment include 24 days vacation; 12 days annual sick leave with additional disability benefits; 11 paid holidays; medical insurance (contribution based on annual salary; coverage for dependents may be purchased); two dental plans available; life insurance paid for by the State; participation in one of the retirement options of the State Universities Retirement System compulsory (8% of salary is withheld and is tax exempt until withdrawal); no Social Security coverage, but Medicare payment is required. This appointment is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois and UIC United Faculty Local 6456, IFT-AFT, AAUP.
