In partnership with over 200 California libraries, archives and history museums, California Revealed (CA-R) is a multi-year project providing digitization, digital preservation, and online access to books, documents, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and ephemera that tell the incredible stories of the Golden State.

The California Revealed Project gathers best archival practices for digitization and digital preservation, establishes low-cost, practical standards, and then manages digitization, online access, and digital preservation activities on behalf of Project partners. Free public access to the online collections is provided via the California Revealed collection and the Internet Archive. In addition, records are shared with Calisphere, WorldCat, and the Digital Public Library of America.

CA-R is grant-funded by the California State Library. Project operations are located at the California State Library in Sacramento.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Digital Services Librarian will serve as a work leader primarily for coordinating the digitization of audiovisual recordings by Project partners and will be responsible for transferring digitized archival materials to the CA-R LTO Digital Repository. The Digital Services Librarian will report to the Director.

Designs and coordinates workflow for digitization, serving, and preserving, with a focus on audiovisual recordings.
Corresponds with partners regarding production issues.
Serves as liaison with digitization vendors.
Confirms invoices.
Troubleshoots production problems.
Assigns to and evaluates work of team members.
Assesses needs and prepares collection materials for shipping to digitization vendors.
Standardizes metadata for ingest in an Islandora content management system.
Communicates with vendors and partner archives.
Performs quality assurance and control of new digital preservation files and metadata records.
Preps files and metadata records for ingest into the CA-R LTO Digital Repository. Writes LTO to be stored offline.
Uploads access files to the Internet Archive.
Uploads, maps and aggregates metadata for californiarevealed.org. Syncs metadata harvests for Calisphere; DPLA; Worldcat.
Assists with development of digital preservation outreach workshops.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Capabilities and Experience
Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
2+ years of experience with cataloging, handling and preservation of archival materials, particularly for moving image and sound formats, and coordinating digitization workflow activities.
Working knowledge of library and archives preservation principles, including digitization and metadata standards for long-term preservation and access.
Demonstrated understanding of archival arrangement and description. Knowledge of current and emerging library and familiarity with information standards such as Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC), PBCore, Dublin Core, Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS), Encoded Archival Description (EAD), and various thesauri for cataloging.
Familiarity with digital asset management systems and repositories.
Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently, in an environment where consultation, flexibility and cooperation are essential.
Ability to effectively troubleshoot technical problems, isolate causes and implement solutions. Patience for training and support.
Strong analytical, documentation, and written/verbal communication skills.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Proficiency with MS Office applications in Microsoft and Mac environments, particularly Excel.

Preferred Capabilities and Experience

Interest in California history.
Experience with cataloging, handling and preservation of digital formats.
Experience and facility with Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition, and Adobe Photoshop (for quality control).

Compensation

$30-39/hour, depending on skills and experience; 32-40 hrs/week, annual contract. Subsequent contracts dependent upon available funding. This position is open until filled and begins immediately.
