SUMMARY
The Exploratorium is a dynamic, multi-faceted organization which produces interactive exhibits, public programming, digital media, and more for our museum visitors, for educators nationwide, and for our partners around the world. The Exploratorium houses a collection of over 600 interactive, hands-on exhibits and art pieces, presents 100+ programs and temporary exhibitions yearly, and serves over 600,000 global visitors annually. An international field leader in informal science education, learning research, and inquiry-rooted exhibit development, the Exploratorium’s museum group is a dynamic creative engine dedicated to curiosity, lifelong learning, and open-ended exploration.
The Digital Asset and Archives Specialist is responsible for all workflows associated with the Exploratorium’s Digital Asset Management System (DAMS), including metadata standards, system maintenance, and training and outreach initiatives. The Specialist will also provide support for additional archiving activities, including support for the development of the Exploratorium’s web archiving initiative. The position reports to the Administrative Director, Integrated Media and Communications.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide day-to-day and long-range administrative and strategic oversight of the Exploratorium’s digital asset infrastructure
Oversee the migration to a new DAMS, including system customizations, upgrades, integrations, testing, and maintenance
Develop and maintain best practices and standards for metadata creation, including improving legacy metadata
Develop and maintain standards, workflows, and policies for the ingestion, description, organization, and migration of all digital assets
Oversee the intake of assets; assist staff in the ingestion of assets, entering additional metadata, and organizing assets to support discovery, sharing, and department workflows. Lead efforts to locate and transfer historical assets from creators to the DAMS.
Provide digital asset management system onboarding training for new staff and ongoing support to individual staff users
Serve as the primary contact for external permission requests for use of Exploratorium copyright-protected content (both commercial and non-commercial); liaise with other museum departments as needed for permissions
Support the Web Team in developing and maintaining the Exploratorium’s Web Archive
Support additional archival initiatives for analog assets

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
MLIS/MA degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in library and information science, digital asset management, or related field
Minimum two years’ experience with a digital asset management system
Knowledge of field-wide metadata standards, digital preservation, and web archiving
Knowledge of records management principles and practices and archival standards and practices
Strong ability to work both independently and in a group
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Demonstrated skills at teaching/training technical skills
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with Archive-It, Canto Cumulus, and/ or NetX preferred
Interest or background in science a strong plus
