Special Collections and Archives at the University Library at California State University, Northridge, is seeking two interns who will apply archival theories of arrangement and description as well as preservation best practices while performing the following tasks:

1. Survey and physically process a photographic collection, paying attention to the photographer’s original description and order.
2. Sample metadata records in the same collection’s digital version and identify reparative or alternative metadata based on the physical collection or other resources.
3. Create a final report that includes findings and recommendations for physical arrangement (e.g., processing plan) and for metadata remediation that better align with the photographer’s original description.

Each intern will be assigned to a different collection and will be working independently. One collection will require more physical processing, while the other collection will require more metadata sampling. The collections are part of the Tom & Ethel Bradley Center.

Qualifications: Verified enrollment in an accredited Library and Information Science graduate program. Ability to work independently and in consultation with other staff; strong oral and written communication skills; research skills; interest in photography; coursework in archival administration, history, or information science. Experience in archival work not required. 

Hours: Interns must evenly distribute hours over the course of the semester/quarter, according to a regular schedule determined in consultation with a supervisor at the beginning of the term. All hours must coincide with the department’s hours of operation (Monday – Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.).
