This experience would be beneficial to those considering a career in an archives or similar institution.
Anticipated Dates of Internship: Flexible! June through August of 2024, up to 40 hours per week.
Summary of Work
Under the supervision of the Manuscript Archivist, the Manuscript Collection Intern will increase access to the State Archives Document and Genealogy holdings by updating collection records and digitizing the collections. Throughout this process, they will examine documents, conduct historical research, write historical sketches, enter data into databases, perform needed preservation actions, digitize all documents, and ingest them into the State Archives’ content management and digital preservation systems. The processing activities undertaken in this project are necessary to ensure accessibility, intellectual control, and long-term preservation of an important part of the State Archives’ manuscript holdings.
Many of the tasks related to processing collections of the State Archives are repetitive, while others are complex, multi-step processes; as a result, attention to detail, self-motivation, ability to work independently, willingness to ask questions and integrate feedback into workflow, are all preferred qualities of the successful candidate. This project is a unique opportunity to work hands-on with interesting and varied primary sources that document North Dakota history.
On-site training will be provided.
