The Boston Public Library (BPL) seeks an innovative and dynamic leader for the position of Assistant Director of Research Collections. This newly created position will provide strategic leadership and visionary oversight to the BPL’s extensive research collection, which consists of an estimated 16 million items including books, serials, government documents, microform, and other formats. The successful candidate will create effective strategies and advance the implementation of development, stewardship, storage, and public access within research collections.

Established in 1848, the BPL is a pioneer of public library service in America. Located in the heart of Boston, it was the first large free municipal library in the United States. Today, the Central Library in Copley Square and twenty-five neighborhood branches serve nearly 4 million visitors per year and millions more online. The Assistant Director of Research Collections will have demonstrated visionary leadership within a library, museum, or other similar cultural heritage institution; in-depth knowledge of current research collection principles, practices, strategies, and policies; and adaptability and an excitement for change. This ideal candidate will be skilled at leading diverse teams and have the ability to work collaboratively and proactively with various advisory groups and levels of staff.
