This two-year position is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a digital archive for Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa that will describe, steward, and provide access to information gathered about the people of Kalaupapa. The archive will serve as a companion piece to the Kalaupapa Memorial, which will display a limited amount of information about each individual who was admitted. The archive will be a living resource as more information is discovered and shared. The goal is to unveil the archive when the Memorial is dedicated. Target date Fall 2026.
The Archivist will:
● Work closely with the Executive Director to identify hardware, software, and other needs
● Balance access and privacy considerations by developing policies for and implementing various levels of access rights
● Develop, document, and implement workflows and procedures for accessioning, ingesting, and processing digital content
● Develop, document, and implement digitization workflows
● Develop policies related to collection use and development
● Arrange and describe analog, born-digital, and hybrid collections according to standards and best practices; this includes a limited number of three-dimensional objects
● Create standards compliant finding aids, inventories, metadata, or other reference tools as needed
● Implement a strategy to preserve digital assets
● Develop user-friendly digital tools
● Maintain and report metrics
● Participate in shared decision-making for planning, resource management, and program development
The archivist will be Hawaiʻi based and willing to travel occasionally to Kalaupapa.
This includes the possibility of working remotely (Hawaiʻi residence) or renting office space.
