Support Services Specialist, Digitization
This position provides technical support for the digitization process, including image creation, metadata application, quality control, and equipment maintenance.
Daily Tasks:
Digital Image Creation and Editing:
• Utilize scanning and photography equipment to capture high-quality digital images of library materials (books, documents, photographs, artifacts) and customer-provided items.
• Perform basic image editing tasks such as cropping, color correction, and dust/scratch removal to ensure high-quality visuals for the digital collections.
• Maintain consistent image quality standards across all digitized materials.
Technical Management of Digital Collections:
• Create basic metadata for digitized materials, including title, creator, and date, following Dublin Core standards.
• Ensure proper file formats are applied to digitized materials for efficient archiving and retrieval.
• Monitor storage capacity and performance of the digital collections’ infrastructure.
Equipment and Technology:
• Operate and maintain various digitization equipment such as scanners, digital cameras, and lighting setups.
• Stay updated on the latest trends in digitization technologies and recommend equipment or software upgrades to the supervisor.
• Assist with the development and implementation of new workflows and procedures for efficient digitization.
Quality Assurance and Best Practices:
• Conduct quality control checks on digitized images to ensure adherence to library standards and best practices.
• Research and implement best practices in digital preservation and accessibility for library
collections.
• Recommend policy and procedural changes to optimize the digitization process and address recurring issues.
Customer Service and Collaboration:
• Consult with staff from other departments on digitization projects to meet their specific
requirements.
• Collaborate with the digitization team to ensure smooth operation and timely completion of projects.
Professional Development:
• Continuously learn and apply emerging best practices in library digitization techniques and technologies.
• Participate in training opportunities to maintain proficiency in image editing software and digital repository systems.
• Stay informed about digital preservation standards and copyright considerations related to digitized materials.
