Department: College Archives – Staff
Special Collections & Archives is Colby College’s repository for rare books, literary materials, and institutional records. SC&A seeks a Research Services and Access Coordinator. This position has primary responsibility for facilitating access and use of records and resources through the delivery of a broad range of reference and access services. The Coordinator serves as the primary point person for on- and off-site researcher requests, including managing all incoming reference inquiries and providing support in scheduling and coordinating researcher appointments.
The Research Services and Access Coordinator’s duties are based in SC&A, located in Miller Library. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages the department’s research spaces, including the lobby, Robinson, Healy, and Wormser rooms, including staffing the lobby desk during open hours.
Researching and responding to reference questions, and referring questions to subject experts within and outside the department.
Manages appointments and some reference scanning requests in coordination with the Curator of Digital Discovery and Engagement and the library’s Digital Preservation Center.
Assists with stacks management duties, especially pulling and refiling materials.
Assists with the planning and staffing of department group visits and events.
Helps to create/collect departmental statistics for administrative reports.
Maintains documentation and communication of procedures to ensure work consistency and quality.
Participates on library committees and/or working groups and completes other assignments as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience (Required)
Minimum of two years of experience in a library, archives, museum, or relevant higher education environment, including course practicums and other pre-graduate experiences (Required)
Must be customer-service oriented with excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills (Required)
Strong written and verbal communication skills in professional settings (Required)
Demonstrates a commitment to valuing diversity and contributes to providing an inclusive working environment (Required)
Experience with detail-oriented tasks with attention to detail, accuracy, and best practices concerning confidentiality (Highly preferred)
Direct experience performing library and/or archival research (Preferred)
Familiarity with fundamental principles of research (Preferred)
Knowledge of or experience with library systems, particularly integrated library systems catalogs, and archival collections management software (Preferred)
Ability to establish priorities when working both independently and as a member of a collaborative team (Preferred)
Demonstrated ability to complete detailed work with minimal supervision and a high degree of accuracy (Preferred)
Must be flexible, curious and committed to ongoing professional development (Preferred)
KEY RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Assistant Director for Special Collections & Archives; collaborates with all members of the SC&A department. Includes interactions with Colby College Libraries colleagues, as well as the Colby community.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary. Ability to move around campus is necessary. Occasional lifting up to 30-50 pounds may be required. Retrieval of materials using step stools or ladders may be required.
