Job Description (if URL to posting not available). Include instructions for how to apply.:
This archivist position performs essential collections management and public access work in the Palace of the Governors Photo Archives department at the New Mexico History Museum (NMHM) by processing and describing photographic and moving image collections and supporting ongoing operations in Photo Archives.
The Assistant Photo Archivist supports the daily operation and management of the photo archives. Their primary responsibility is to increase access to and care of NMHM’s archival collections through arrangement and description of their contents. To carry out this work, they may also oversee the processing projects of volunteers, interns, and contractors.
This position will perform professional, strategic, and efficient (MPLP) processing of both physical and digital archival collections consistent with standards in a special collections library, museum, archive, or historical society. They will demonstrate proficiency with the supplies, processes, and software required to perform these tasks, including the creation of finding aids, the use of museum and/or archival collections databases, and familiarity with physical and digital preservation protocols. The Assistant Photo Archivist will work with photographic and AV materials, including historic processes and digital file formats; show familiarity with New Mexico history, people, and places; and have experience with description of visual materials as well as reparative description.
They also support the Curator of Photographs and Archival Collections, the Photo Archivist, and other staff members: in caring for and managing physical and digital collections, in improving the operation of the Photo Archives and History Library departments, by facilitating in-person and remote access to holdings (including working with researchers, staffing the reading room, and responding to general reference requests), and in helping carry out priorities, including in support roles for grant projects, research and interpretation, outreach (including social media), and NMHM exhibitions (including on demand and project-based digitization).
The position serves many stakeholders, responding to internal department and museum-wide needs, while also serving the general public, helping specialized researchers, and stewarding the collections for researchers of the future.
