This bulletin is for the Archivist I examination. The exam is being held in anticipation of one or more upcoming job openings at the California State Archives.
The California State Archives application process is a two-step process:
1) If you meet the Archivist I qualifications, apply to take the exam. If your application is successful and you take the exam, you will need to pass with a score high enough to be placed on an “eligible list.”
2) After being placed on an eligible list, you may apply to subsequent job openings. Applying to job openings is a separate application process from the exam.
If you wish to apply for upcoming Archivist I job openings at the California State Archives, you must first take this exam and achieve a score high enough to make the eligible list (details are on the linked exam bulletin).
Typical Archivist I responsibilities:
Accessioning and processing historical records and artifacts, including appraising materials for historical significance.
Providing reference services and answering research inquiries from patrons.
Writing finding aids and compiling guides to archival material.
Creating metadata for born-digital and digitized records.
Conducting tours.
Writing reports and compiling assignment statistics.
Keeping abreast of current archival practices by reading professional literature and attending workshops and conferences.
Other duties as assigned.
