National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program
WebsiteNational Park Service/NCPE Internship Program

On March 1, 1872, Yellowstone became the first national park for all to enjoy the unique hydrothermal and geologic features. Within the park, the Heritage & Research Center (HRC) houses the park’s museum and archives. This position is located within the park boundary in Gardiner, MT, five miles north of Park Headquarters/Mammoth Hot Springs, WY where basic amenities are available (small grocery store, K-12 school, restaurants, motels, etc.). Full-service amenities are available 60 miles north in Livingston, MT and 90 miles northwest in Bozeman, MT. A small medical clinic is located at Mammoth Hot Springs. Temperatures in this area of the park vary from 70-90+ degrees Fahrenheit in the summer to sub-zero in the winter.

The National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE)’s Internship Program is a partnership with the National Park Service and other Federal agencies with cultural resource protection and public land management responsibilities. The purpose is to accomplish needed and important work on federally protected lands while providing program participants with professional experience in their chosen fields. Interns work under the guidance of agency staff who are subject area experts to carry out the mission of the park.

To be eligible, applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old (or 35 if a veteran) when starting the internship, a post-secondary student (certificate program, 2-year, 4-year, or graduate level), or a recent graduate (within the past 12 months at the time of application), and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

The Yellowstone Research Library works closely with the Yellowstone Museum and Archives collections. The library has a backlog of thousands of items to be cataloged and is currently engaged in digitization efforts. The intern will be an integral member of the library team and will help staff the research desk, answer patron questions both in person and remotely, and execute daily circulation duties. They will engage in original cataloging of the library’s backlog using RDA standards. Work also may include scanning, editing, and metadata completion. The intern will also help conduct public tours of the building and drive a government vehicle around Yellowstone for the monthly summer bookmobile. Travel stipend provided. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position for 10 weeks. Low cost park housing is available for the successful candidate.

This position is currently funded for 400 hours. A background security investigation may be required before the start date. All NCPE internships accrue 4 hours of PTO for every 80 hours worked.

Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate. Once earned, the PLC certificate can be used to apply for eligible Federal permanent, temporary, or term positions. Visit https://preservenet.org/ncpe-internships/ for details about this benefit. Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee Federal employment.
