Overview: The Baltimore City Archives and Records Management Center is seeking an intern to assist with a comprehensive shelf survey of boxed records stored at the Records Center. This project supports ongoing efforts to verify, update, and maintain accurate inventory records for City agencies, ensuring proper long-term preservation and access to official materials.
Responsibilities:
Conduct physical shelf surveys to verify box locations against the current inventory database.
Identify and document discrepancies such as missing, mislabeled, or relocated boxes.
Rehouse records as needed into appropriate record storage boxes or archival containers to ensure proper preservation.
Assist with labeling, shelf organization, and maintaining accurate location tracking.
Record updated information into spreadsheets or inventory management systems.
Collaborate with Archives and Records Management staff to ensure safe and efficient handling of materials.
Qualifications:
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Ability to lift and move standard record storage boxes (up to 50 lbs) safely.
Comfortable working in warehouse or storage environments, including tasks that involve working at heights and the safe use of ladders and work-assist vehicles.
Interest in archives, records management, history, or library science preferred.
Familiarity with Excel or other data-entry tools is a plus.
Learning Outcomes:
Gain hands-on experience in archival inventory control, records management, and preservation practices.
Learn how large-scale records storage facilities are organized and maintained.
Contribute directly to improving access to the official records of Baltimore City government.
Schedule:
Flexible daytime hours, Monday through Friday. Minimum commitment of 8–10 hours per week preferred.
