The Nevada State Library, Archives, and Public Records Division invites applicants for the following part-time temporary position funded by the National Historic Records Preservation Commission. Position is contingent upon funding. Position does not include benefits.

JOB TITLE: Archival Consultant

JOB SCOPE:
The State of Nevada Library, Archives and Public Records Division seeks an Archival Consultant to provide assistance to at least four Nevada repositories in gaining baseline intellectual control of their archival collections. The Consultant will report to the Chair/Coordinator of the Nevada State Historical Records Advisory Board (NVSHRAB). The work may be completed 100% remotely or, at the discretion of the State Archives and in agreement with the Consultant, the work may include site visits to participating repositories. The schedule is flexible, with the expectation that the Consultant will communicate with stakeholders during business hours (Pacific Time) and complete the work within the project deadlines. The estimated time commitment is approximately 868 hours, and the rate of pay is up to $75 per hour for qualified candidates. The total consultant fees are not to exceed $65,100. The estimated timeframe for the project is February 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026.

Duties include:
• Develop a simple but extensible archival collection survey form/template.
• Provide virtual group instruction on fundamental best practices for archives: Session 1. Fundamental best practices for physical control (archival records handling, storage, housing, location tracking, etc.). Session 2. Fundamental best practices for intellectual control (assigning unique identifiers, recording collection information at the time of acquisition, etc.). Session 3. How to conduct a collection wide survey (measuring collections, entering data in a standardized manner, etc.)
• Follow up after each group instruction session to see how participants have applied the instruction to confirm that participants are heading in the right direction
• Schedule weekly/biweekly meetings with individual participants to answer questions, identify barriers, resolve issues, and support progress
• As needed, assist participants in exporting and understanding their data
• Provide virtual group instruction on how collection survey data can be sorted, filtered, and used to holistically view collections, establish conservation and processing priorities, inform space planning, support funding requests, and more
• Provide group and individual instruction on how survey data can be maintained and used as a foundation for tracking incoming collections
• Assist participants in posting their baseline collection descriptions (minus confidential information) to their own websites in a searchable format exported from the survey

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s degree in library science, archives management, public history, or related field
• Minimum 2 years of related experience in archives or records
• Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in the management of archives and records
• Working knowledge of descriptive metadata standards and controlled vocabularies
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience working both independently and in collaboration with a team

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience with a collection management system such as ArchivesSpace
• Experience working with small historical societies, museums, or tribal archives
• Evidence of sensitivity to persons of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
