Production Assistant / Assistant Editor (Film Handling & Inspection)
Location: New York City
Duration: 3–6 weeks (anticipated under 1 month)
Schedule: Flexible; based on filmmakers’ availability
Compensation: Hourly, commensurate with experience
We are seeking a detail-oriented Production Assistant / Assistant Editor with hands-on experience in film handling and inspection to support a short-term archival and editorial project in NYC.
This project involves working with a significant collection related to a family foundation with a history in art and philanthropy. The media is being prepped for a commissioned documentary.
Responsibilities include:
– Inspecting 16mm film elements (primarily original negatives)
– Handling and reviewing 1/4” magnetic audio tape
– Loading and operating a 16mm Steenbeck for playback and review
– Identifying and locating specific interview content within reels
– Logging detailed notes and content descriptions into a database or spreadsheet
– Assisting with coordination of film scanning for selected materials
– Supporting basic asset management, organization, and tracking
– Assisting with shipping/traffic of media elements as needed
Qualifications:
– Prior experience working with 16mm film, especially inspection and handling
– Familiarity with flatbed editing systems (Steenbeck or similar)
– Experience with archival workflows, logging, and media organization
– Strong attention to detail and ability to work methodically
Comfort working with delicate and potentially irreplaceable materials
– Excellent organizational and communication skills
Preferred (but not required):
– Experience with audio formats, particularly 1/4” tape
– Background in archival, post-production, or film preservation environments
