Job Summary
Under the direction of the Associate Dean for University Archives and Scholarly Communications, the Archivist coordinates and manages an archival program wherein the physical and digital materials that document the activities and history of the university and its predecessor institutions, as well as the history of pivotal local persons and events are identified, collected, organized, preserved, and made available for use.
Essential Job Functions
Acquires and processes physical and digital collection materials according to accepted archival standards and procedures
Oversees conservation efforts and re-houses documents
Prepares and maintains finding aids such as inventory and collection guides
Administers digital archives and special collections infrastructure; prepares repository and archival materials for digitization
Works directly with Records Management Officer and individual departments to acquire official university records
Provides reference assistance to interested parties regarding the University Archives, Special Collections materials, and LU history
Engages in outreach activities promoting the Library, University Archives, and Special Collections
Develops and maintains archives and special collections operating procedures
Develop and teach library and archival instruction sessions
Minimum and Desired Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in Library or information Science with a focus on Archival Management from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program is required.
A Master’s degree in Library or information Science with a focus on Archival Management or archival experience or Graduate Certificate in Archival Management from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program is required
Minimum of 2 (two) years related job experience; relatable experience considered
Archival instruction
Ability to meet Tenure and Promotion requirements
Desired Qualifications:
An undergraduate or second graduate degree in History, Literature, or other appropriate discipline
Experience creating finding aids and organizing and describing materials
Interest of community outreach for archival collection development
Supplemental Information
Key Competencies:
Ability to use digitization software, Springshare products, institutional repositories (IR), digital repositories such as TARO.
Ability to use Content DM and Archival Description practices.
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Practical knowledge of appraisal and conservation practices
Knowledge of archives and special collections operating procedures
Ability to develop faculty relationships
Ability to develop and teach archival instruction
Ability to provide reference assistance to interested parties regarding the University Archives, Special Collections materials, and LU history
Physical Requirements: Able to lift 20 lbs.
Job Conditions: Work in library archival setting including shelving and moving materials, some exposure to dust and old papers.
