Job Description (if URL to posting not available). Include instructions for how to apply:
The Alaska State Museum invites interested candidates to apply for a curatorial internship with emphasis on gubernatorial collections. The intern will create a user-friendly webpage to highlight the gubernatorial collections of the State Library, Archives and Museum in advance of a future exhibit using books, records, and objects from these collections. This internship is an occupational experience designed to complement formal academic training and comes with a minimum of $5,000 stipend; it may be increased depending on the skills and experience of the applicant chosen, and travel/housing considerations. The internship will last 10 weeks. The intern is expected to work approximately 30 hours per week, and is required to be in person on-site at the Andrew P. Kashevaroff Building in downtown Juneau, Alaska.
This internship provides an exceptional opportunity for individuals interested in:
• Independent (curatorial) research on the history of Alaska’s Governors
• Working one-on-one with professional museum, archives and library staff
• Using multiple resources to interpret and associate documents and photos with historical events
• Using Lucidea software and other databases: ARGUS, ArchivEra, ArchiveSpace, LibGuides
• Researching Alaska Historical Library collections and creating or enhancing finding aids

The intern should provide their own laptop. If this internship is being taken for academic credit, it is the responsibility of the student to articulate this in their application, and their responsibility to connect the Coordinator with their academic advisor for successful coordination with the school’s requirements.
Individuals familiar with Alaska history will have insights that may place them as applicants at an advantage, but all applicants with coursework in museum studies or experience in museums will be considered, as well as those with a background in archival or library studies, or closely related field. Coursework or exposure to webpage design is expected. The Review Committee may consider exceptional undergraduate students as well as graduate students, and those who have completed their academic studies, if early in their career. This internship is intended to deepen curatorial and project management skills of a person heading into a career in museum, library or archive work.

To apply, send your résumé, undergraduate and graduate school transcripts (unofficial are fine), and a cover letter to: mary.irvine@alaska.gov Mary Irvine, Internship Coordinator for the Alaska State Museum. In your cover letter, describe your experience with projects in which you reviewed large collections and created a substantial guide to those collections, and/or similar projects in which you created a webpage or website, and your interest in gubernatorial history and collections if any. Please apply by April 15, 2026. Travel to and from Alaska, and housing are not provided, and applicants are encouraged to research housing opportunities as early as possible, as housing in Alaska’s capital is tight.
