Job Description:
Gale Primary Sources, the digital collections publishing division of Gale, a Cengage company, is seeking a freelance Collection Processor to inventory a collection of historical materials, primarily grey literature issues by government agencies and interest groups related to disabilities, public health, and women’s studies. The collection is housed at the Institute of Governmental Studies Library (IGSL) at the University of California, Berkeley.
Inventorying these materials at the item level serves as a critical step in their digitization for a series of searchable online archives devoted to telling the story through primary sources of public policy in the areas of disabilities, public health, and women’s issues. Processing work shall be conducted on-site at the IGSL, located in Berkeley, California on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley. A background check shall be required of the selected candidate as part of the hiring process.
The Collection Processor will be required to perform the following tasks:
• Identify the location with the help of IGSL staff of the sections that shall be inventoried.
• Create an item-level inventory using a standardized excel template that shall capture the following descriptive metadata: call number, author/creator, title, publisher, place of publication, date of publication, no. of pages, item condition (as warranted).
• Collaborate with Gale and Library staff to ensure consistency with institutional standards.
• Provide regular updates and a final report upon project completion.
• Receive supervision and training as needed.
This project is estimated to require approximately 400 hours to complete. Hours of work can be negotiated but are limited to the times when the IGSL is open. Work starts upon hire and completion of the background check.
Please send a copy of your resume and a short covering letter outlining your availability to rachel.holt@cengage.com. Indicate number of hours available to work per week on site at the IGSL.
