Transylvania University Library seeks a Rare Book Cataloger. The position is temporary and will last until the job is complete or the funding is exhausted, whichever occurs first. We anticipate it to be a 12 month position.
The Rare Book Cataloger is responsible for cataloging, organizing, describing, and making assigned rare books collections discoverable to scholars. The person in the position will perform original and complex MARC-based copy cataloging of monographic and serial resources in a range of subject areas, languages, and formats, including print and non-print.
The Rare Books Cataloger should have an ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library science. They will have a minimum of 2 years of professional cataloging experience in an academic or research library, with emphasis on original cataloging of rare books in special collections. Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of cataloging, subject analysis, classification, and authority control, and experience applying current cataloging standards according to recognized rules and standards, including one or more of the following: the Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials manuals, LC classification, LCSH, RDA, AACR2. Knowledge of and experience with MARC formats and OCLC cataloging input standards. Familiarity with the WMS Integrated Library System a plus. Bibliographic knowledge of Latin and/or romance languages. Good interpersonal skills, as well as strong oral and written communication skills.
