The Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) preserves the collective memory of Alberta, and contributes to the protection of Albertans’ rights and the sense of the Alberta identity. The Provincial Archives of Alberta holds approximately 44,365 linear metres of government textual records; 4,355 linear metres of private records; 131,363 maps, plans and drawings; 1,472,741 photographic images; 58,013 objects of audiovisual holdings such as film, video and audio recordings; and 14,354 volumes of library holdings. Reporting to the Team Lead, Government Records, the Archival Technician provides technical support to the PAA in meeting its mandated function to acquire, preserve and make available records of permanent value to the people and Government of Alberta.
As the successful candidate, you will support the government and the private records program of the Provincial Archives of Alberta by acknowledging and documenting the acceptance of records into the custody and control of an archive (accessioning) and processing archival records.
To be successful, you will require an awareness of the legislation that provides the framework within which the PAA operates and of archival principles, practices and techniques, especially those related to the processing of archival collections. This includes preliminary sorting of archival material, original order, provenance, file listing, inventory compilation, database entry and preservation techniques. Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills are a must, as you will be a key contact for clients, donors, and volunteers.
A two-year diploma in a related field, such as Office and Records Administration or Information Management and Library Technology, or related post-secondary program is required. A minimum of one year related experience is necessary. Awareness of archival principles, practices and techniques and demonstrated ability to perform preventive preservation work is preferred. Familiarity with the government records management process is an asset. Equivalencies will be considered.
$1,633.40 to $ 2,069.91 bi-weekly ($42,631 to $54,025 per annum)
This competition may be used to fill current and future vacancies across the Government of Alberta. Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification. Candidates will be required to undergo security screening.
