POSITION DESCRIPTION
NATURE OF WORK
The Head of the Historical Research Center in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Library leads all aspects related to the planning, development, and management of the University’s institutional archives and special collections. The Head plays a vital role in developing and promoting the Historical Research Center through traditional and innovative means to enhance the educational and scholarly use of the collection by students and faculty at UAMS and researchers in Arkansas as well as throughout the country. The Head develops programming to encourage the use of the collection by the citizens of Arkansas. The Head works closely with and oversees the work of the Archivist/Assistant Head in various venues such as UAMS archives. This position is an integral part of the senior administrative team of the UAMS Library and requires working in a team environment within the Library as well as throughout the campus.

This position reports to the UAMS Library Director of Operations.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position provides leadership and direction in the long-range planning for and day to day operation of the Historical Research Center (HRC) in the UAMS Library. Responsibilities include the following:
• Supervision of two full-time employees (UAMS Archivist, Assistant Head; HRC Assistant)
• Oversight of the development and implementation of policies and procedures for collection acquisitions, processing, preservation and access
• Oversight of the activities of the Center friends group, the Society for the History of Medicine and the Health Professions (including maintenance of membership records, financial management, event planning and publication of a newsletter)
• Planning and mounting historical exhibits in various display cases on campus and for temporary display at various events
• Provision of historical research and reference services
• Oversight of the use of the physical facilities and collections
• Provision of presentations, publications, and various publicity activities to promote the use of the HRC and to engage potential donors (monetary and material)
• Identification and pursuit of potential funding opportunities, particularly in conjunction with UAMS Institutional Advancement
• Oversees the availability and distribution of appropriate reports (statistical and narrative) on Center activities and achievements
• Awareness of trends in archives and special collections management and development
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Master’s degree (MLS or MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program or a graduate degree in a relevant discipline plus five years of related experience in an academic or research library, special collections, or archives; experience in providing historical research and reference services; commitment to providing quality service to diverse constituents; ability to work independently and in cooperation with colleagues in a service-oriented environment; proven ability to prioritize work with competing demands and meet multiple deadlines; ability to engage in fundraising and donor relations; knowledge and awareness of current trends in digitization of historical materials; strong interpersonal skills, strong written and oral communication skills.
Preferred: Knowledge of the history of Arkansas and the health sciences; leadership role with a friends support group; experience with membership management software; training in or working knowledge of archival theory and practice; experience with rare book collections and knowledge of the antiquarian book trade; knowledge of intellectual property and copyright issues related to archives, libraries & special collections.
POSITION BENEFITS & APPLICATION INFORMATION
Minimum salary is $62,500, commensurate with education and experience. This is a 12-month, non-tenure track faculty appointment with a competitive benefits package with 22 days of vacation,11 holidays, and 12 days sick leave annually, and retirement plan options including TIAA/CREF and Fidelity.
