The Philadelphia Museum of Art Library & Archives seeks an unpaid intern or practicum student interested in Library and Information Science to earn hands-on experience of art and museum library practices and procedures in various areas, from collection development, reference, education and outreach, to circulation, cataloging, serials, archives, and resource sharing. We will work with the student to create an enriching and well-rounded experience to gain a comprehensive overview of the operation of an art museum library and archives, and best practices in general.
Duties may include
– Providing support for collection development, assisting with the review and processing of new acquisitions.
– Copy cataloging a variety of materials utilizing OCLC Connexion in conjunction with our Aleph Integrated Library System
– Providing reference, training, and research assistance to public and in-house curators and patrons, (includes some paging and shelving)
– Contribute to collection maintenance projects (weeding or moving of collections).
– Processing archival collections, which can include rehousing, arranging, and describing archival materials
– Assisting Image Rights Manager with projects as requested, offering a grounding in copyright issues as they apply in a museum setting
Hours
The student should commit to working at least 10 hours per week, Monday–Friday.
Qualifications
Good candidates for this position should meet most or all of the following criteria:
– Be enrolled in a graduate-level Library Science program or a closely related field
– Interested in the arts and/or museums
– Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
– Ability to work independently as well as take directions; be willing to ask questions
– Able to lift 25 pounds and push a book cart
– Familiar with Microsoft Windows and Office applications
– Familiar with archival principles, such as original order and provenance
– And, a knowledge of OCLC Worldcat, electronic resources is helpful
