Reporting to the Bortz Library Director, Project Archivist’s responsibility will be organizing, arranging, describing, and providing access to the papers of General Samuel V. Wilson. Samuel V. Wilson was the 22nd President of Hampden-Sydney College, from 1992-2000, and retired in 1977 as Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, with the rank of Lieutenant General, after a long and distinguished military and intelligence career. The Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest, established at Hampden-Sydney College in 1996, is named for General Wilson. This full-time archivist position, funded by gifts from alumni and friends of Hampden-Sydney College, is a non-career track position, for a two-year fixed term.
Successful candidate will hold a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or Archival Studies from an ALA-accredited university and will have two years or more of experience processing archival and special collections in both print and electronic formats. Strong organizational, research, and analytical skills with a keen eye for details are preferable, as is the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to practice discretion when working with confidential materials are expected. Candidate must have comprehensive understanding of primary source research.
