Context: The Sierra Club’s William E. Colby Memorial Library is small reference library that serves the staff, as well as writers, researchers and historians. The Colby Library contains a special collection of historic materials, including books, documents, reports, maps, scrapbooks, and audio-visual materials, that require preservation and conservation.
Scope: In collaboration with the librarian and digital archivist, the library intern will survey and assess the special collection of historic maps and posters, inventory and document each item, and apply recommended archival strategies.
Open storage containers and sort materials by format and context.
Examine and evaluate each item for damage, wear & tear, or other potential problems.
Assist with ordering archival supplies.
Apply archival preservation methods, such as using acid-free enclosures, interleaving, etc.
Photograph each item.
Create an inventory spreadsheet.
Enter data, condition issues, and digital images for each item into collection spreadsheet.
Knowledge & Skills:
Student working towards an MLIS degree with specialization in archival studies, special collections, maps, or similar experience.
Familiarity with archival principles, collection, and processing.
Experience with handling antiquarian materials.
Experience with handling and describing maps (preferred, but not required).
Experience with spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
Experience with creating and managing digital photographs.
Important attributes include how to plan, organize, set and achieve goals.
Location: Sierra Club Headquarters, Oakland, CA.
Duration: 12 weeks (June thru August, 2019); 20 hours/week (TBD).
Compensation: $15/hour, non-represented.
