The George Washington University (GW) Libraries and Academic Innovation (LAI) is searching for a Senior Library Associate to work independently and perform highly skilled library duties requiring an understanding of library-wide practices and procedures as well as a specialized knowledge of a specific library functional areas. The successful candidate troubleshoots access problems, performs Q/A of data management activities, provides and enhances electronic access, oversees records maintenance, collaborates with campus colleagues, and supports librarian efforts as needed. May interpret policies and procedures.

Reporting to the Collections Coordinator & Manuscripts Librarian, the Senior Library Associate works within the Special Collections Research Center. Core responsibilities include:

–Accessing and editing data in various automated library databases for the purpose of creating, processing, retrieving and maintaining information within a specific functional area, and may train and supervise the work of lower level library support staff.
–Recommending department policies and services based on questions/feedback from students and faculty at the reference desk, and may be responsible for opening and closing facility.
–Performing processing of archival collections according to national archival methods and standards, which may include describing individual items using for inclusion in the department’s digital collections. Reviewing processing plans and overseeing projects to ensure completion and accuracy. To ensure discoverability, creating finding aids, MARC records and coordinating upload to national discovery tools such as ArchiveGrid. Managing student workers performing similar functions.
–Coordinating and managing the retrieval of collection donations. This requires a valid driver’s license to use the GW car sharing account.
–Accessioning incoming collections to ensure completion of all library and university documentation and ensuring that records in the department’s accession database are accurate and complete.
–Participating in the preparation and digitization of collection material in multiple media formats.
–Performing historical research when needed in the course of processing collections and responding to reference inquiries. Assisting patrons using archival collections.
–Collaborating with planning and executing events. Participating in Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) meetings and operational planning and decision-making, as appropriate.
–Serving the reference desk during scheduled hours including periodic Wednesday evening and Saturday shifts.
–In consultation with the Collections Coordinator and University Archivist, hiring, training and managing student employees.
–Connecting faculty, students, and external researchers with resources by responding to reference queries via email, instant messaging, phone, and in person.

The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
