Job Description (if URL to posting not available). Please include instructions for how to apply.: I am currently looking to hire an archivist to perform records management, review, arrangement, description, cataloging, supervision, training, procedures and program development, public relations, and reference for the Douglas A. Birk Collection in the Department of Anthropology. The archivist will lead and manage the processing of the paper records, manuscript materials, and other documents in accordance with archival standards and oversee the creation of a Birk Collection finding aid.
The Douglas A. Birk Collection is extremely important to Minnesota and Great Lakes archaeology and history. Doug Birk was a prominent Minnesota archaeologist and nationally renowned scholar of fur trade archaeology. It consists of:
1) An extensive research library of over 2000 volumes of books, journals, site reports, and manuscripts.
2) A paper archive of approximately 80 linear feet of materials, including extensive and comprehensive field notes for 50 years of archaeological field work in Minnesota as well as archival and primary documents.
3) An extensive map collection. Some maps are contained in two sets of map cabinets, but perhaps the bulk of the maps are simply in rolls of maps.
4) Artifacts (approximately 60.83 cubic feet of material) and all associated records from archaeological site 21MO20, an 18th-century fur trade post listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
I am looking for someone with previous experience working with archival collections at an archives and who holds either a BA or BS (with a major in either: History, Public History, Anthropology, American Studies, Social Studies, Information Media, Library Science, English). Preferred experience includes work in an academic archive and an ALA accredited MLS. Museum and/or archaeological curatorial experience are also preferred.
