The SAA Career Center Needs Your Help!

In tandem with this year’s SAA Annual Meeting, the SAA Career Center is excited to provide individuals with the opportunity to hone their career development skills and volunteer with SAA. We are offering two forms of career services: advising sessions to speak with other professionals or mock interviews to get ready for that next big job opportunity! In order to provide career services, we are seeking volunteers to serve as Advisors and Mock Interviewers. This is your chance to be a career coach!

During this year’s SAA Annual Meeting, the Career Center will run virtually as follows:
Wed., August 5: 9 am – 1 pm* (advising); 5pm – 9pm (interviews)
Thur., August 6: 9 am – 1 pm (interviews); 5pm – 9pm (advising)
Fri., August 7: 9 am – 1 pm (advising); 5pm – 9pm (interviews)
Sat., August 8: 9 am – 1 pm (advising and interviews)

The 2020 virtual Career Center will offer:
Mock interviews
Resume review by appointment
General career consulting by experienced SAA members
Online resources covering resume building and cover letters

Career Advisors
Participants in this year’s Career Center may schedule an appointment in advance for consultation with a career advisor. Career advising offers an opportunity for new professionals to gain advice from more experienced professionals. In addition, members seeking to make career changes often seek advising support.
Topics for the in-person career advising sessions are left up to the advisor and advisee, but we recommend communicating in advance of your in-person meeting about subjects to cover in order to get the most out of your time together.

Mock Interviewers
Participants in this year’s Career Center may also sign up for mock interviews. We are seeking interviewers who have hiring experience, or would like more interviewing experience, and would be comfortable engaging in mock interviews.
In your session(s), you should plan to correspond with the individual(s) seeking services. We will ask the Interviewee to introduce themselves to you and provide the job posting they want to ‘interview’ for, along with their resume and cover letter. From that point on, it will be up to both people to correspond in preparation for the mock interview as if this were a real job prospect.
The mock interview time at SAA should focus on asking interview-style questions, followed by the mentor providing the interviewee with feedback regarding the entire process, including professionalism, resume, cover letter, and any other topics that might help the interviewer.

Appointment Details
Once we have a list of volunteers for interviewers/advisors, we will be sending out information for those seeking advising or to do mock interviews. Those wanting services will choose someone based on the times and bio information you have provided. You should receive an email confirmation and reminders for the times you have volunteered for. Please remember to check your sign up as the event nears to determine whether someone has signed up for your session(s). If someone signs up for your session, you will receive an email no later than the day before your session that includes information about the person you’ll be connecting with. If you elected to conduct your mock interview/advising session via Zoom, that email will include a link for your online meeting. If you indicated a preference to conduct your mock interview/advising session via phone, that email will include contact information for the individual who signed up for your session. We ask that the advisor/interviewer call their participant at the selected time.

The deadline to sign up as either a mock interviewer or an advisor is July 17. If you are interested, please sign up here. This link will be used to collect information that we need to match you with interviewees/advisees – including your name, bio information, and dates/times you are available to volunteer, and whether you’d prefer to conduct your session via phone or Zoom.
